The most impressive, however, is the Castle of San Miguel, dating back to the Moorish period. The castle was heavily damaged during the Napoleonic wars in 1830, but since 1986, restorations have taken place at intervals. The outer walls, in particular, are impressive to see and offer a stunning view over the rocky coastline. This is a must-see attraction during a holiday to Almuñécar.

The path from the castle back to the center leads you past the small but charming Manjuelo botanical garden. A little paradise that is home to more than 200 species of subtropical plants and trees. Nearby, you’ll find a unique bird sanctuary. 

For truly adventurous nature lovers, the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains are magnificent. You can go hiking, mountain biking, and even skiing until April. Some lifts go up to 3,000 meters. This way, you can be on the slopes in the morning and enjoy lunch at one of the chiringuitos on the beach.

The food in Almuñécar is particularly tasty and is still prepared in the traditional way. Dishes are mainly made with fresh fish, olive oil, wine, and lots and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
